You light a candle to unwind. Maybe it's after a long day, a slow Sunday morning, or right before you settle into your evening ritual. You want warmth, a flicker of calm, the feeling of your home becoming your sanctuary.
But here's what most candle brands won't tell you: the wax your candle is made of matters just as much as the scent — maybe more. Because while you're breathing in that beautiful glow, your lungs are also taking in everything that wax releases into the air.
At Lumiere Roots, we believe your home should be a place of restoration, not a source of hidden toxins. That's why we work exclusively with 100% pure beeswax — and once you understand why, we think you'll never go back to anything else.
What's Actually Burning in Most Candles?
Walk into any home goods store and you'll find shelves full of candles — pillar candles, jar candles, tealights, votives. Most of them are made from paraffin wax, a petroleum byproduct left over after crude oil is refined for fuel. A few will be labelled "natural" and made from soy wax or coconut wax blends. On the surface, they all look (and often smell) lovely.
But when you light them, the chemistry changes.
Paraffin candles, when burned, release a cocktail of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including toluene and benzene — chemicals classified as known carcinogens. The soot they produce is the same fine particulate matter found in diesel exhaust, which can settle on your walls, furniture, and deep inside your airways over time.
Soy wax is often marketed as the clean alternative, but the reality is more complicated. Most commercial soy wax is made from genetically modified soybeans, heavily processed with chemical solvents, and frequently blended with paraffin without full disclosure. The "soy candle" you're burning may not be what you think it is.
Coconut and other plant-based blends are better, but they still burn at lower temperatures, produce softer light, and often require synthetic fragrance loads to hold scent — which introduces their own set of irritants.
Then there's beeswax. And beeswax is in a category entirely of its own.
What Makes Pure Beeswax Different
Beeswax is one of the oldest natural substances used by humans. Bees produce it themselves to build the honeycomb — the very structure that stores their honey and protects their young. It is, quite literally, living architecture.
When you burn pure beeswax, something remarkable happens.
1. It Cleans the Air While It Burns
This is the quality that sets beeswax apart from every other candle wax. As pure beeswax burns, it naturally releases negative ions into the surrounding air.
Negative ions are the same particles found in abundance near waterfalls, after rainfall, or in forest air — environments we instinctively associate with feeling clear, calm, and refreshed. In your home environment, the air is typically full of positive ions attached to dust, pollen, pet dander, mould spores, and airborne pollutants. These positively charged particles float freely and end up in your lungs and on your surfaces.
When negative ions from a burning beeswax candle enter the air, they bind to these positively charged particles, making them too heavy to stay airborne. They fall to the floor, out of your breathing zone. The result? Air that is measurably cleaner while the candle is burning.
No other candle wax does this. Paraffin adds to the air pollution. Soy is roughly neutral. Beeswax actively works to purify.
2. It Burns Cleaner Than Any Other Wax
Pure beeswax has one of the highest melting points of any natural wax. This means it burns slower, cooler, and more completely — producing virtually no soot and very little smoke when the wick is properly trimmed.
Paraffin candles, by contrast, release black soot that you'll see on the jar, on your walls over time, and — invisibly — in your lungs. If you've ever noticed black marks above a candle or on your ceiling, that's paraffin residue making itself visible.
With beeswax, what you see is a clean, honey-bright flame and very little else.
3. It Has No Need for Synthetic Additives
Pure, high-quality beeswax carries its own gentle natural fragrance — a subtle warmth of honey and wildflowers that comes from the propolis and floral nectars baked into the wax by the bees themselves. You don't need to add anything.
This matters because synthetic fragrances are one of the primary sources of indoor air pollution from candles. Even "natural fragrance" blends can contain undisclosed chemical compounds. At Lumiere Roots, we keep our beeswax candles free from synthetic fragrance, dyes, and additives — because the wax itself is the gift.
4. It Burns Longer
Because beeswax is denser and burns at a higher temperature than paraffin or soy, a beeswax candle will outlast its counterparts of the same size significantly. The upfront investment in a pure beeswax candle reflects not just the quality of the material, but the hours of clean, healing light you'll actually get from it.
The Importance of the Word "Pure"
This is where we need to be honest with you about something the candle industry often obscures.
A candle labelled "beeswax" is not always what it seems. There is no standardised legal requirement for a candle to contain a minimum percentage of beeswax before it can be called a beeswax candle. This means a candle with as little as 5% beeswax can legally carry that label — with the other 95% being paraffin.
This is the "impostor beeswax" problem, and it's widespread.
When we say pure beeswax at Lumiere Roots, we mean exactly that. 100%. No paraffin blending, no synthetic wax extensions, no compromise. We source our beeswax from ethical, traceable apiaries and verify its purity before it ever becomes one of our candles.
If you're shopping for beeswax candles anywhere, the questions to ask are:
- What percentage of the wax is actually beeswax?
- What is the remaining wax content?
- Is the beeswax sourced from ethical beekeepers?
- Are there added dyes, synthetic fragrances, or paraffin blends?
Pure beeswax will be ivory to golden yellow in colour, not bright white (highly bleached beeswax loses many of its beneficial qualities). It will have a faint, natural honey scent even before it's lit. And it will cost more — because real beeswax, ethically harvested, is one of the most precious natural materials in the world.
Your Home as a Sanctuary
We spend more time indoors than ever before. The quality of our indoor air directly affects how we sleep, how we breathe, how we feel — and yet most of us give very little thought to what we're burning inside our homes.
A candle feels like a small thing. But light one every evening, in a bedroom or living room, and over weeks and months it's adding up to hundreds of hours of whatever that wax releases into your air.
At Lumiere Roots, we started this brand because we believed there was a better way — a candle that gives back to the space it burns in, rather than quietly degrading it. Pure beeswax is not a trend or a premium upsell. It is simply the most intelligent, most ancient, most aligned choice for a healthy home.
Your home deserves it. Your lungs deserve it. And once you light a real beeswax candle and see that warm, steady, golden flame — you'll understand why there's truly nothing else like it.
Lumiere Roots candles are made with 100% pure, ethically sourced Indian beeswax — free from synthetic additives, dyes, and toxins. Every candle is crafted to bring clean light and cleaner air into your home.
