How to Choose a Cleaner Candle

Lumiere Roots Jasmine Neroli Scented Candle for Sleep & Meditation

A simple 5-point guide to reading labels, comparing waxes and buying with confidence

A better candle starts with better questions

Walk down any candle aisle and you'll see the same words again and again: "natural," "clean," "luxury." The trouble is that these words don't mean the same thing from one brand to the next, and none of them is a legal standard for what's inside the jar.

The most useful habit is to look past the front label and ask about four things: the wax, the wick, the fragrance and how openly the brand discloses its ingredients. This guide gives you five quick checks you can use on any candle, ours included.

The five-point cleaner-candle check

1. Identify the wax

Look for a specific wax statement, such as "100% beeswax." If the label says only "wax blend" or "natural wax," ask what the blend actually contains and in what proportion.

Many conventional candles use paraffin, a wax refined from petroleum, or a blend that includes it. Others use soy or mixed vegetable waxes. None of these is automatically bad, but a clear answer is a good sign, and a vague one is worth a follow-up question.

How we answer it: Lumiere Roots candles are made from 100% pure beeswax, with no paraffin and no soy. Our beeswax is farm-sourced from the Himalayan region, and every candle is hand-poured in our studio in Uttrakhand.

2. Ask what creates the scent

If you prefer minimal ingredients, choose an unscented candle. Pure beeswax has its own soft, honeyed aroma, so it needs nothing added. For scented candles, look for clear disclosure of whether essential oils, fragrance oils or a blend is used. The word "fragrance" on its own tells you very little.

How we answer it: Our pillars are unscented. Our scented collection uses essential oils, with the scent notes named on each product, for example rose, cardamom and vanilla, or jasmine and neroli.

3. Check the wick

The wick is half the candle, yet it is often left off the label. Look for a clearly identified wick material, and for confirmation that it is lead-free.

How we answer it: Lumiere Roots uses lead-free cotton wicks in its scented collection.

4. Match the candle to the use

The right candle depends on what you want from it:

  • Pillars and tapers suit everyday light, dining tables and festive evenings.
  • Jar candles suit fragrance rituals, such as winding down in the evening.
  • Citronella and lemon eucalyptus formats are best placed on balconies and in outdoor spaces.

Buying for the use, rather than the look, means you'll actually enjoy burning it.

5. Burn it correctly

Even a very good candle burns badly if it's mishandled.

  • Trim the wick as directed before each burn.
  • Where appropriate, let the candle burn long enough for the wax to melt evenly across the top.
  • Keep it away from drafts.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Questions to ask any candle brand

Keep this list handy when you shop, whether it's us or someone else:

  1. What percentage and type of wax is used?
  2. Is the product paraffin-free and soy-free?
  3. What creates the scent?
  4. Is the full ingredient list available?
  5. What is the tested burn time and the correct care method?

A brand that is happy to answer all five is one you can buy from with more confidence.

Why we think Lumiere Roots is worth considering

We aren't going to tell you ours is the only good candle. Plenty of makers do careful work. What we can tell you is why people choose us:

  • One wax, stated plainly. 100% pure beeswax, with no paraffin or soy blended in.
  • Nothing hidden in the scent. Unscented pillars, and scented jars made with essential oils.
  • Long, steady burns. Our 6-inch pillar is listed at 110 to 150 hours, our 4-inch pillar at 50 hours, and our scented jars at 50 hours. Actual burn time varies with room conditions and care.
  • Made by hand. Hand-poured in small batches in India, not run off a mass production line.
  • Simple, honest claims. Cruelty-free, paraben-free and made with natural ingredients.
  • A leftover that's useful. One customer told us the last of their beeswax became modelling clay for their child. We'd suggest checking the safety of any craft use for your own household.

If you want a candle for everyday light, our pillars are the place to start. For an evening ritual, try a scented jar. For the balcony, there's our citronella and lemon eucalyptus candle.

The takeaway

A cleaner candle isn't about one buzzword. It's about being able to answer a few simple questions: what's the wax, what's the scent, what's the wick, and can the brand tell you plainly what's inside? Ask them of any candle you buy, and you'll choose better.
